The Bedard-Evans Family

When and how did your family become interested in martial arts?

Patricia (Mom) always had an interest in martial arts since taking a brief intro class in karate in high school. She especially valued the discipline and self-defense skills that came from martial practice. As soon as Amelia and Connor were old enough, signing them up for class was a no-brainer! And after Sifu Tom convinced Mom that Kung Fu wasn't just for kids, she joined in the fun too...

What were some of your early impressions of the school/instructors/training?

The first thing that Patricia noticed when watching the children's classes was how well Sifu Tom managed to teach the physical conditioning and Kung Fu skills while making the learning fun. He has the gift of being able to find the way of explaining the skills and forms that is right for each student. Unlike at other martial arts schools that Patricia had visited, no student was ignored or left to figure things out on their own. In the adult classes, the same individual attention from Sifu Tom combined with a camaraderie and mutual assistance among students made learning Kung Fu as a complete novice a supportive experience.

What aspects of the training do you each enjoy the most? Do you have any favorite techniques or forms?

Amelia is very competitve and she enjoys the shuai jiao (wrestling) the most - she is delighted by her "wins", and her "losses" motivate her to try harder. Connor enjoys practicing his forms, especially Long Fist 1, and he can't wait to learn the sword form! Patricia enjoys the Tai Chi empty hand form and the Kung Fu stick form best, but the challenge of applying the Kung Fu forms to actual sparring will surely inspire her to keep training for many years to come.

What are the reasons you all have stuck with your training for this long?

Because it's fun! As soon as one skills is acquired, Kung Fu offers several more to challenge you, so you truly feel like you are pushing your limits and growing. And as we have become friends with classmates and their parents, the school now feels like family.

What are your family's goals with respect to your training?

Amelia and Connor both dream of the day they get their black sashes. Patricia hopes to make Kung Fu and Tai Chi a lifelong practice.
